Letters to the Editor About Lorna

Lorna stands for:

Affordable housing

Ensure code provisions are in place to allow for smaller homes, such as tiny homes, on smaller footprints for affordability while providing for ample shared open space and create builder incentives for such projects.

Broadband county-wide

Work with the PUD, school districts, business groups, agencies and nonprofits to Plan, Finance and Deliver high-speed Internet service to all areas of Jefferson County.

Green jobs

Jefferson County is ideally suited to attract the entrepreneurial talent that will champion energy efficient, ecofriendly jobs using cutting edge technology. Lorna will work with the county’s EDC, Chamber, existing green businesses and educational institutions to address impediments such as the need for advanced training and education and Internet services to ensure that we create an environment that is friendly and efficient for such businesses to locate or start-up here.

Lorna builds successful coalitions to get things done.

LORNA HAS YEARS OF EXPERIENCE working collaboratively with private organizations and governmental officials at all levels. She is a consensus builder who garners unanimous votes on both the Jefferson County Planning Commission and Board of County Commissioners.

WELL KNOWN AND WELL LIKED by our state and federal elected officials, Lorna served on the Washington State Economic Development Board. She started a small business that has grown into a multi-million dollar business while raising a young family.

LORNA HAD A 25-YEAR CAREER as a Snohomish County environmental and lands use manager before returning to Jefferson County ten years ago. She is known for her facilitation of appropriately scaled public infrastructure projects. Lorna will use her collaborative expertise to work for all of us!

Lorna's track record is stellar. She is in a class by herself.

Her accomplishments include:

PROTECTION ISLAND NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE
Lorna received national recognition for her key political role in establishing the Protection Island National Wildlife Refuge in partnership with Eleanor Stopps. After years of lobbying and trips to Washington D.C. Lorna persuaded elected officials to support the plan and President Reagan signed off on the bill to create this priceless reserve for breeding birds.(See details here and news articles on the "About" page.)

ATLANTIC SALMON NET PENS
Lorna helped lead a coalition of scientists and concerned citizens in collaboration with Commissioner Phil Johnson and State Representative Mike Chapman to successfully ban the use of salmon net pens in Washington, protecting our local salmon from diseases that these fish farming practices create. Letter to Marine Trades

NORTHERN TIER PIPELINE
Lorna helped mobilize and lead a coalition that successfully stopped the Northern Tier Pipeline that would have run up and over Protection Island, up and over Whidbey Island and then under water to Seattle. The Salish Sea remains a pristine body of water because this pipeline proposal was stopped. Campaign Letter

Lorna has lived in other cultures, speaks another language, has a multi-racial family, and is sponsoring an asylum applicant.

These experiences give Lorna a broader perspective that will benefit Jefferson County as we strive to create a more fair and welcoming place for everyone.

Women's rights are human rights. Lorna supports a woman's right to choose and to live a life free from violence and discrimination.

Women have a right to self determination to pursue education, careers, elected office or homemaking roles. Lorna has been a lifetime advocate for women through mentoring, recruitment and advocacy.

Lorna's family settled here in 1903 as lighthouse keepers. Moving to Cape George ten years ago was Lorna's "coming home."

Lorna has already made a significant positive impact in Jefferson County.

During the last 8 years while serving on the Jefferson County Conservation Futures Committee and Planning Commission Lorna and her fellow committee members have protected thousands of acres of farm and forest lands here. Local farms that have benefited from her work include Finnriver Farm, Sunfield Farm, Glendale Farm and Bolton Farm.
It is crucial that we place an effective leader in this commissioner position - one with a strong fiscal management background, who will deliver the resources and support we need now and into the future. Lorna Smith is that person.

Lorna can't do this alone. She needs your help.

We all need to support each other right now. People are struggling and you can count on Lorna Smith to stand up for those facing evictions, unemployment, isolation and hunger.

Lorna has led successfully through lean times. She cares deeply about people and knows how to fine-tune county programs and budgets to ride out a recession without staff lay-offs or essential program reductions. These skills will help us protect vital county employees and essential functions that we need to respond to this crisis.

Support Lorna with your endorsement!

Housing will be built. Jobs will be created. Green businesses will be supported. Lorna is pragmatic, competent and ready to lead.
